Boiler Room peer through a keyhole at Jaeger for a glimpse at the world of electronic club music in Oslo. With dogmatic alcohol laws and early closing times, clubbing in Oslo is an intense and spirited experience, one you will only understand if you’ve lived through it. With that in mind, we have invited Boiler Room to document a night at Jaeger. We’ve asked the mad-hatter of Norwegian club music Prins Thomas to join next generation club provocateur Finnebassen in our intimate basement space, replete with its solid oak dj booth and overblown Funktion One system. A few of our diligent residents, G-Ha & Olanskii and Øyvind Morken, round off the line-up, showcasing some of the mixed record bags and musical personas that make Jaeger tic week in and week out
Prins Thomas (Full Pupp)
Often regarded as on of the world’s best DJ, Prins Thomas is nothing if not a humble presence in the world of electronic music. A “larger-than-life” personality, whose reverence for the music he proliferates, outweighs his individualistic impulses, sets a standard for DJing that few can achieve. Sets that disintegrate notions of styles, genres and even regions, are brought together from Prins Thomas’ acute musical knowledge that travels through the most unlikely corners of dance music. A musical library that extends from the Norwegian DJ’s origins, listening to the likes of Shep Pettibone to the present ,where he often plays a hand in producing or remixing the latest dance floor highlights.
Through his labels, Full Pupp, Rett i Fletta and Internasjonal, he has motivated and mobilised a scene in Oslo that took on the name Space Disco in the early part of the last decade, and has rocketed off into the furthest reaches of this musical galaxy through artists like Todd Terje, Lindstrøm, Magnus International, Øyvind Morken and of course through his own discography.
G-Ha & Olanskii (Sunkissed)
Two pivotal bodies in the sphere of Norwegian electronic music, G-Ha & Olanskii are an event, a club, a DJ duo, and a musical authority for Norway. Individually adept as DJ, selectors and tastemaker, Ola “Olanskii” Smith-Simonsen and Geir Holger “g-HA” Aspenes’ musical voices unified for Sunkissed, an events series that became a backbone of Oslo’s electronic music scene and beyond.
Sunkissed’s kaleidoscopic view to the musical world, which was informed by the personal relationships they’ve forged with their peers, remain a beacon of good musical taste in Oslo and Norway, but where trend informs, G-Ha & Olanskii are always had a step ahead. Guided by their appreciation for electronic dance music and its roots, they invariably lead the way to new dimensions through their bookings and DJ sets, bringing new sounds to Norway and exporting the sound of Norway to the rest of the world.
They have played a fundamental role in the development of Norwegian music abroad as guests at Panorama Bar, Fabric, Robert Johnson, Into the Valley and Moog, where they’ve at times have given fellow Norwegian artists a platform to the outside world, proving to be a motivational force behind Oslo and Norway’s thriving electronic music scene, through Sunkissed and more recently through Jaeger – the club part founded by Olanskii, and host to their internationally acclaimed Frædag residencies.
Finnebassen (Noir)
Occupying that precarious position between the accessible and the obscure, Finnebassen is an internationally renowned producer and DJ that can go from festival stages to intimate settings. A chart topping producer, his music can go from the depths of Deep House to the transcendental heavens of a Moroder-esque high energy trance and has found favour on labels like Noir. Staying close to his roots, he can often be found playing Oslo’s esteemed club venues Jaeger, Villa and Sunkissed, in a fervorous pursuit of bringing down the borders between genres, styles and audiences.
Øyvind Morken (Full Pupp, Moonlighting)
The self-proclaimed schizophrenic DJ, tutored in the school of Prins Thomas and Pål Strangefruit, showcases an eclecticism and a penchant for the esoteric that moves like a roller-coaster through club music’s diversified corners. Morken is most at home at his weekly residency, where his encyclopedic knowledge of music takes on the physical form in DJ sets that energise and entertain. When he’s not playing music, or finding music to play he is also in the studio, contributing his own voice to the rich tapestry to club music’s footnote biography through releases on Full Pupp, and his idiosyncratic Moonlighting label. Like Prins Thomas, he favours a diverse musical diorama that is nothing if not captivating.
RLOC
Ricky Late, Oskar Pask, Celius (RLOC) is the glue that holds every Friday together. They are the rock on which every weekend at Jæger begins, laying the foundation for G-Ha & Olanskii and a host of international guests which mark some of the most significant leading lights in electronic club music’s history. With playlists that go from the auspicious warm-up sets of a Friday night to the exuberant fanaticism of peak-time, they can go from the more subtle regions of Disco and Afrobeat to the nether regions of House and Acid.
