Daniel Avery / Fadi Mohem / Sploofi / JADALAREIGN / Haruka / 4AM NYC is on Fri, Oct 20, 2023 at Basement, Maspeth. Lineup: Daniel Avery.
Daniel Avery returns to the club. The UK artist’s work goes beyond the confines of “production” - a record from Avery is invariably a bold, even visionary statement. His albums are marked by gaping cinematic vistas and an emotionally impactful sense of storytelling that harkens back to the great album artists of the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s. His last set at the club was an exercise in ferocity, a blinding runthrough of techno’s most molten interactions. Berlin’s Fadi Mohem tightens the screws on linear, barreling techno. The FJAAK collaborator and Klockworks affiliate is honing the craft of the perfect loop, with a no-nonsense, club-use-only attitude that cannot be fucked with. Recent tracks like “Reactant” and “Transition” land with that perfect weight, sending pulse waves through the dancefloor and drifting with the assured grace of a cloudbank cut by a mountainous peak. Sploofi’s scorching, Detroit-nodding sets do not miss. She brings a firm grip and undeniable confidence to tensile techno.
JADALAREIGN represents NY house at its finest. She conjures a huge, gloriously soulful and unapologetic vibe in the booth. Drawing directly from house music’s Black, queer and femme lineages, LAREIGN foregrounds these in their full expressive, exuberant and urgent beauty. Her charisma and talent have made her something of a figurehead, but JADALAREIGN’s artistry is undiluted by any attention or accolades: she’s the real deal, every time, no matter what. Haruka’s swerving curveballs hew close to the spirit of chuggy house, late night disco-tinged dance tracks and a distinctly NY sense of experimentation. Listening to their productions evokes the dusty treasures of A1, semi private loft parties and the joys of a proper hardware synth jam. There’s a relentless creativity to their craft that veers away from the expected into something strange and enticing. 4AM NYC embodies the swinging and dusky energy of classic NY house. A longtime veteran of the scene, their sets are rooted in some of the city’s quintessential eras of nightlife. Enveloping, hypnotic sonics and an endless grooviness calls out through the darkness.
