Dweller - NY’s outstanding all-black electronic music festival - returns to BASEMENT as part of its fifth edition. To celebrate the landmark event, they’ve invited one of techno’s most definitive artists. Detroit’s Robert Hood launched his solo career in the early ‘90s, following a stint in Underground Resistance. His highly unique production style blended cold-blooded, combative psychedelia with a nuanced, hard-earned sense of awe. Early masterpieces like “Minimal Nation” truly set the standard for minimal techno, loop techno and helped to define the genre for every generation that would follow. The burning power of his imagination, force of his convictions and determination to transcend the encroaching blight of his hometown are apparent in every note, drum hit and accent. “It was more than a revolution. It was more than a movement” he said in an interview. “This music helped to save my life. This music represents the struggle of black artists from Detroit who came from nothing.” NY’s Devoye and Daiyah represent the new guard, each nodding to Hood’s legacy. Devoye’s swinging approach - by turns sultry and kinetic - harkens back to the streetwise sensuality that was a constant presence in Hood’s catalog. Daiyah, on the other hand, goes all-in on energy. The Rumble N The Ramble founder sets her sights on direct, destructive techno.

Chicago-via-NY artist Shaun J Wright represents the fulfillment of house music’s legacy in the modern era. As a preteen, he would stay up late calling into radio stations to source track ID’s late into the night. “At some point they would recognise my voice,” he remembers, “and say, ‘Shaun go to bed, it’s midnight’.” Participation in vogue balls, fashion studies in London and early musical explorations brought him into contact with Hercules & Love Affair’s Andy Butler, and soon he joined the group as the primary vocalist. He draws on this rich history in his DJ sets, which weave nervy, jacking percussion, soulful catharsis and relentless energy. Miss Twink USA also represents Chicago. A member of Ariel Zetina’s Rumors crew, Miss Twink hits hard with slamming, unapologetic club bangers. It’s one licentious beatdown after the other, delivered with severely poised cool. Kilopatrah Jones balances it out with a dose of earthy funk. Whether pulling from richly-hued analog sounds or more kinetic rollers, there’s a sense of rootedness to all her mixes.
