RETRO continues on a relentless streak of bringing some of the best DJs from around the world to Jæger with Marcel Dettmann and a very special 4 hour set focussing on the raw appeal of his label Marcel Dettmann Records .

Marcel Dettmann has been a selfless facilitator of Techno since his teens. When his hometown, the former GDR, a small suburb outside of Berlin, lacked the facilities to buy and sell records, he took it upon himself to distribute his favourite records from the likes of Depeche Mode, The Cure, Front 242 and a wave of post punk industrial cuts that influenced him at the time. It was obvious he was destined for greater things, something that would combine his love for the records, nightlife and his ear for music, and that point came when a job for Hardwax and a residency at Ostgut (Berghain’s predecessor) encouraged Dettmann to move to Berlin and sealed his fate. It coincided with a time when Techno, always the musical underdog, saw a newfound interest in the genre facilitated by the likes of Marcell Dettman and Berghain.

Following releases on Berghain’s Ostgut Ton label, Dettman would also go on to establish MDR (Marcel Dettmann Records), tirelessly working towards promoting a sound of Techno that would be raw, but not crass, channelled through a German sensibility for the sound as influenced by the Dettmann’s exquisite ear for music and his post punk industrial influences from his youth.

Marcell Dettmann is an enabler of Techno, which today takes on many different forms. As a DJ he promotes the genre diligently; as a label boss, he offers an equal platform for new artists working in the genre to make an impression on the scene; and as an artist, he brings a unique voice to the genre through labels like Ostgut Ton, 50 Weapons, and of course MDR to name but a few. It’s in the roll of label boss and selector that he’ll be joining us for this RETRO and Jæger collaboration for a very special 4-hour set that will see Dettmann give us a taste of the past, present and future of Techno, with a focus on MDR.

It was Ola’s endless pursuit of bringing the best in underground club music to Oslo, that’s made this booking possible, which in association with RETRO’s Karima and DJ Nuhhh, means yet another slice of clubbing history coming to Jæger. Marcell Dettmann follows hot on the heels of Jackmaster, Willie Burns and Âme this year with RETRO being the constant denominator tying them all together. RETRO captures the essence of Jæger's musical versatility and weaves it seamlessly through Disco, Garage, Soul, Gospel, Acid House and Techno with a focus on the music of the past and the influences of today. DJ Nuhhh (kids love bass) and Karima go back to back each Thursday, with the two DJs being an unstoppable force in the booth as they pick through the history of dance music to arrive at the present. Dj Nuhhh's impressive vinyl collection – some of which line our wall in the basement – allows the DJ absolute freedom to pounce on the impulses of his audience, while Karima's vast musical knowledge in the booth and her role as a music journalist take those impulses and refines them into a musical expedition to the far reaches of the dance floor. DJ Nuhhh and Karima will provide the support for Marcel Dettmann.
