Slam / Flavia Laus / Eric Umble / Massimiliano Pagliara / David Elimelech / Kim Anh is on Fri, Dec 1, 2023 at Basement, Maspeth. Lineup: Slam.
Glasgow’s Slam return to headline BASEMENT. The duo are paragons of ice-cold, elemental techno. They tap into an undeniably visceral vein, with depth charge low end, shivering details in the upper register and enough tension to score a thriller. As the heads of Soma and dedicated organizers, they’ve consistently nurtured the next generation while setting the high water mark with their own work. As a long-running b2b, Slam is a rarity in dance music, but they mix with such a telepathic intuitiveness that it’s obvious why they’re still at it after all these years. Pornceptual, Gegen and Tresor resident Flavia Laus is back as well. The Berlin based phenom has become a major force in the scene over a few quick years, defining herself with a avant-garde tinged approach that shows a wide range and fiery, attuned control. Eric Umble completes the lineup. One of the founders of NYC’s FACETIME party and a regular on the scene, Umble’s embrace of taut, spacious techno is a perfect compliment to Slam’s staunch power and Laus’ slicing precision.
Massimiliano Pagliara has become a regular at STUDIO. The Italian DJ is an undisputed master, coaxing ethereal highs and moments of deep resonance. His productions flow like water, setting the tone with generous rolling grooves and building to melodic peaks and glorious climaxes that channel the hedonistic glories of disco while sidestepping the gestural repetitions of the throwback. David Elimelech steps up with the true house spirit. The Berlin-based DJ breathes fresh life into vintage classics, playing with a timeless naughtiness. He draws on the lineage of Chicago house, with its era-defining mixture of futuristic sound design, rowdy hardware jacking and concrete-tinged eroticism. Kim Anh similarly channels the best and strangest of the ‘80s, traveling far afield from the mainstream into dark alleyways. Her selections are some of the deepest in the games, pulling on generations of deviant raving.
