Mongezi Thomas Stuurman, also professionally known as Mpura, was an Amapiano artist
who left a mark on South Africa’s thriving Amapiano scene. Mpura’s catchy lyrics and flow
were reminiscent of verses in some of the most iconic Kwaito songs. Part of a steadily
revolving posse of Alexandra Township-based producers and collaborators (including Mr
JazziQ, Felo Le Tee and JazziDisciples), Mpura broke out in 2020 on his best friend Busta
929’s “Umsebenzi Wethu'', where he added verses in his very distinctive low-key voice. The
following year, he solidified his appeal by adding an Amapianio spin with Kamo Mphela to
the hit single “Squander” from Nigerian Afrobeats artists, Falz and Niniola. Mpura, also
known as Mpura Pudi amongst his fans, was a vibrant personality and was popularly known
for his Instagram Live "Bedtime Stories", where he interacted with his fans frequently. Loved
by many, his music still has relevance and continues to take local radio stations by storm.
